How did it all begin?
In the days of old, Staten Island consisted largely of profitable dairy and poultry farms, most of which had disappeared by the twentieth century. What can I see and do in Staten Island?
Take the ferry around the island and soak in the views as you glide past Manhattan and Ellis Island. Then talk a walk down the F.D.R Boardwalk – the fourth longest in the world! Just two blocks away from the ferry drop-off point, you will find the Staten Island Museum, which is full of exhibits of the rich history of the ferry and island it. The Staten Island Children’s Museum is an experience, you should not miss out on if you are travelling with the family.
A visit to the Historic districts of St George and St Paul’s Avenue will expose you and your family to Victorian architecture and living at its best. You cannot miss the Historic Richmond Town during your visit.
This 100 acre property is New York City’s oldest operating farm and is home to 30 original buildings and a museum- reflecting the diversity of American history and the hardships of colonial living.
Take the family to the Staten Island Zoo for the day. You can even enjoy free entry on a Wednesday from 2.00 pm if you want to save money. Visit the Staten Island Cricket Club which is the oldest operating club in New York. Although Staten Island is a built-up area, open parkland still exists.
You can take a guided field trip or hike through the 3000 acre Greenbelt, a New York City Park well worth visiting. If you are feeling adventurous why not visit the Staten Island Skating Pavilion and take a beginner ice skating lesson?
If you are in for more culture at the end of the day, visit the CSI centre for the Arts and watch a show in one of the five theaters, or visit the beautifully restored Sir George Theatre. A nostalgic trip worth taking is to Sandy Ground Historical Museum, the oldest community originally set up by newly freed slaves from New York.
