Albany is the central city in New York’s capital district. Located on the Hudson River, 240 km north of New York City, Albany is the fourth largest urban area in New York. It has close ties with the other regions of the Capital District.
Albany was first settled in by European settlers in 1614, but it was not officially a city until 1686. Albany became the capital of the state in 1797. The modern Albany was established by Dutch trading posts for fur trade. It was named after the Duke of Albany by the British after they took over in the year 1664 until when it was called Beverwijck. Albany was a centre of transportation in the late 18th century and a majority of the 19th century. It was this city that had the earliest railroad systems in the world.
Albany was also one of America’s first cities to develop the public amenities lines like water and electricity as well as natural gas and sewage lines. Its main exports were beer, lumber, ironworks etc. Albany opened one of the first commercial airports in the world.
